Poole Day 8

The forecast for Saturday was flat calm, and we got that in the morning.

About as calm as Poole can get – not a breath of wind.

The forecast for Sunday was for heavy rain and strong winds overnight, and none of us wanted to pack up our encampments in the rain.

There was sailing on Saturday, Roy and Jenny took light airs to the harbour entrance and back on the top of the tide. We packed up and returned home.

The weather could have been kind to us, but it really was not – the nights were bitterly cold, the day temperatures of 4-6C meant we only wanted to do short sails, rather than the daysailing taking the ebb out and returning on the flood which makes for great sailing. The wind during the middle of the week was uncomfortably strong and the North Easterly direction meant that favourite destinations such as Wareham were downwind, Studland and Swanage were lee shores, making Rockley a frequent destination (very sheltered) that week. The wind was so cold in the evening that we managed only one campfire social, hosted beautifully by Roy and Jenny.

Despite the weather being suboptimal, Dorset is a lovely place for a holiday and we enjoyed day trips to the seaside and other locations in the area.
