Dinghy cruising training day 2

Day two dawned bright and cloudless, and with a gentle gradient wind F2-3 from the East.

We gathered to discuss the opportunities of the day, and were briefed on “Man Overboard” and were encouraged to think through and then practically practice MOB from a variety of start-points.

That allowed the Topper Open fleet to launch and be away before we launched and we landed on the lee shore of Cobnor Point at about 11am.

The first session was MOB, and we practiced that until about 12:30 when we stopped for lunch.

The afternoon sessions of reefing afloat and sailing backwards were also sprinkled with a bit of spinnaker work.

Trio Steve Martin.
Trio James Sandy.
Trio Simon Adri.
Versa Paul Clive.
Wanderer Jeremy Lisbeth.

We finished about 4pm, and packed up and left.

The syllabus included practice in

  • Lee Shore Landing (we did a lot of this as Cobnor Point was a lee shore)
  • Course Made Good – sailing efficiently in a tidal location
  • Spinnakers
  • Towing a sailing dinghy with a sailing dinghy
  • Reefing afloat
  • Man OverBoard from a variety of starting points (Beating, Reaching, Broad Reaching, Running)
  • Sailing Backwards

We didn’t sail towards Itchenor and the furthest South we went was to turn Chalkdock once; we stayed in the half-mile channel for the entire weekend, and got a lot done.
