The forecast was for “variable” winds, which is the Met Office code word for very little to no wind. We occupied ourselves handsomely with on-field games of
Discus, throwing and catching a frisbee.
Shot-Put, throwing a Monkey’s Fist weighted rope the furthest distance.
Archery, throwing tennis balls at a Velcro covered target.
Tennis, ping pong over the windbreak and then a multi-part quiz including nautical and sailing subjects and knot identification.
Four teams competed for a variety of prizes. Many thanks to Jenny and Roy for conceiving and leading the games.
We then made our way using paddle board, canoe and dinghy to the Shipwright’s for an afternoon drink, arriving at high water. Edmund sailed in both directions, which included sailing back to the site in light and variable winds against a strongly ebbing tide.
In the early evening, we assembled our BBQs in one area and laid tables with cloths, candles and napkins in another for a social “Fine Dining” evening, followed by fires in each bbq to continue to enjoy each other’s company.
Then the Stones family provided us with the most unexpected group event of the fortnight! They equipped us with various improvised percussion instruments to get us collectively to perform a Samba. It was ably led by Jack with cries of “I like melons, I like bananas” to keep us in time…which were still ringing in our collective brains the following morning.
It was an excellent end to an excellent day.
Thanks to David for day to day coordination of the camp, and to Jenny who planned the sailing destinations and made such an excellent programme of activities.
