Helford day 10 – Gweek, Chickens and Fire

Gweek for breakfast
Yesterday several campers drove to Gweek for breakfast. Today we planned to sail there for breakfast. The forecast F3-5 SW was ideal and we embarked at 9am for the sail to Gweek in a good wind and beat all the way there.
Sarah-Louise, Mark and Elliot motored there in their Trio and arrived in very good time. Morgan took the Solution, Mel and Steve and Ruth in a Trio, Anna and Mark in a Trio, Ged and Stephen in the Storm 17, Martin and Simon in the Wayfarer, plus canoeists Adri, Chris and the Stones family.
The tide had started ebbing 30 minutes before low tide, and the amplitude of the Spring tide this cycle was muted, so the highest we could navigate up the northern creek at Gweek was by the house, and there was no room for dinghies at the cafe. Those who motored and Morgan got breakfast, as did the Stones, the rest returned to the field for home cooked breakfasts.

Chicken Run
Jenny ran the Chicken Run for the Helford sailors, and there was a chicken run held also at the Salcombe camp. The wind was infuriating and the ebb brutal on the way to the turning point at Tremaine Quay, and only one boat turned with 19 minutes to go to their finishing time. There was only just a spare 90 seconds to lose from the turning buoy to the finish line and one boat finished in a time close to their allotted time and achieved a time of one second. In completely different circumstances, the Chicken Run was run in Salcombe and two boats achieved 3 seconds. Many thanks to Jenny for organising the Helford event.
Camp Fire
We held a mass cookout first, then created two camp fires and sang camp fire songs and monologues. Contributions were many and varied and it was a lovely evening. It was finished once the lights went out with watching for shooting stars. Thanks to Mel for organising this event.
