Protected: Helford River Camp 2026

Cody Sailing Club facilitate the availability of access to the field and water, and conduct no risk assessment. It is up to individual participants to assess and mitigate the risks.

Opening Times

The site is available to us from Saturday 1st August to Sunday 18th inclusive.

Directions

The farm entrance and the location of the site can be easily found using the ‘what three words’ app. https://w3w.co/rosier.heartless.molars  gives the field entrance and https://w3w.co/speeded.reseller.deeper gives the farm entrance.

50.098386, -5.155866 is the lat and long for the field, and some sat-navs will accept a decimal lat and long entry.
The last part of the postal address for Calmansack (or Calmansac) Farm is Port Navas, Falmouth TR11 5RN. Pop that in your sat-nav or app and see how close it gets you to Calmansack Farm. It might be OK, depending on where the individual app thinks the postcode is.

///impressed.contacts.form is a What3Words location for the entrance to the field. what3words is compatible with navigation apps, so you can get directions to a 3 word address via Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze and more.
Download what3words onto your phone, enter impressed.contacts.form into the app, select the UK location, click ’navigate’ and select a navigation app and it will hand the precise location to your phone navigation app and take you to the field entrance

The suggested route is to approach Falmouth on the A39 and when you are 2 miles from Falmouth on the Penryn bypass turn right at the “Hillhead roundabout” signposted “Budock Water”.

After about a quarter of a mile, turn right towards Constantine. After 200yds turn left at the “T” junction. Continue for another 2.5 miles then turn left signposted Constantine just before reaching the village of “Treverva”. After another 1.5 miles the road bears round to the right. Follow this for another 0,4 miles then take a left turn at a small grassy triangle down a narrow lane that becomes single track in places. At the end of this lane a “T” junction is reached with the farm track leading to the campsite almost directly opposite across the road. You will now be on farmland so if you have to open any gates, please shut them after you. Carry straight on where the main track turns left up towards Upper Calamansack until you reach Lower Calamansack Farm. At the farmhouse, turn left past some cottages and immediately afterwards turn right into the field.

This is one of Cody’s regular and most popular camp site, for those who’ve not been before, the field is reasonably flat at the bottom end (about 10 degrees from flat) rising to 12 degrees further up the hill and a steep slipway has been cut down to the foreshore in the SW corner.

Arrival times

If you are planning to arrive on Friday 2nd Aug, please do not arrive until after 11.00 hrs. All other days please arrive after 09.00hrs. The final approach to Helford field is via narrow country lanes, then via a private farm drive and finally via a rutted track that runs very close to the front doors and windows of houses. In the past we have been fairly relaxed about our arrivals, which have in some instances seen some of us arriving during the night or the early hours, this is no longer possible.

Camp Pitches

Pitch allocation will be in a first come first serve basis, unless there are specific needs in which case, please get in contact with camp organiser in advance.

Site Specific Considerations

No dogs or pets of any description are permitted at camp.

Tents Only. The camping field is tent only. It may be possible to accommodate other sorts of camping vehicle, and usually only in extenuating circumstances, with the permission of the land owner, via the camp organisers.

In some years because of the risk of fire, we have been asked not to use barbeques of fires in the field. However, barbeques may be used on the beach. Whether we can BBQ on the field is weather dependent and will be determined before the start of camp.

As with all our camps, we should leave the site as we would wish to find it. In the event of prolonged wet weather, we must take care not to create muddy tracks when driving out of the field and leave cars at the top of the field. PLEASE DO NOT SPIN YOUR WHEELS trying to get out – ask for help if needed.

Site facilities

Fresh water can be obtained from a tap on the left of the field entrance.

A pit will be provided for disposal of Elsan waste, usually located near the top of the field, on the side opposite to the entrance. This is for human waste only; please do not put food waste in the pit. Note that you will need to take your own toilet and tent but some sets are available for hire from the club.

Access to the shore is via a steep cutting; a handrail and steps will be provided.

Camp Organisation

We usually hold short briefing meeting each day at around 0900am. The purpose of the meeting is to introduce participants (on first day) and any new arrivals, listen to the weather forecast, discuss the days programme and deal with any issues that might have arisen.

For this year’s camp the briefing will be led by Jenny Chilvers (unless someone wants to volunteer) and the weather forecast will be given by Steve White.

Proposed Camp Programme

Since camps are in two locations the aspirations for a Regatta or Chicken Run will be discussed at the beginning of camp. Possible dates are in the programme as place holders.

Please note that leads for each day are suggested below but can be amended as necessary during camp.

XXXXXXX<<<<<< AWAITING PROGRAMME >>>>>>XXXXXXX

Event Leaders shown in the programme are suggested only – please let us know at camp if you have any concerns

Club Camp Toilets:  Please note, both sites are wild camping sites. There is access to fresh water and a suitable chemical loo emptying point only. There are no shower or toilet facilities available and therefore all attendees need to bring portable cooking, camping water containers, chemical toilet and washing facilities with them to camp. The Club has several portable camping toilets that members can loan from the club; you would need to make arrangements with one of the Committee to collect one for themselves from our storage shed in Farnborough.

Camp charges – per person per night

Members Prices

There is no requirement for payment up front this year as that makes more work for our Treasurer; however, we request that all payments due for any of the sites are paid up within 1 week of returning from the camp – so by the 25th August please. Payment can only be made by Bank Transfer to CODY SC, sort code 30-93-20, account number 39002268.

Members: £XXXXXX per person per night,

Children (over 3 years and up to their 19th birthday): £XXXXXX per person per night. (There is no fee for any child aged 3 or under).

Any additional events such as Pirates Breakfast or Cream Tea will need to be paid with camp fees before the due date.

Members Guests

We welcome friends or family of Cody members to Cody’s Helford Camp. Guests of members are welcome to join the event at the invitation of a member, without becoming members of the club. The Cody member who has invited the guest(s) must also be present at camp for all the days that their guests will be at camp for, and must be responsible for their guest’s behavior at all times. We expect all guests to abide by the same rules as our members. Guests will pay the “Member of Guest” fee for the time they stay with us (which has been set at twice the appropriate member rate). Guests of members may not bring their own dinghy to sail. If someone wants to bring their own dinghy to sail they must become full members.

Boating

Dinghies should be stored in a line near the top of the slip but leaving enough space for operation of the pulley system. If two cars are used, consider leaving one at the top of the field. In any event, please park across the field to minimise cars running downhill.

The sailing area is spectacular, with both long and short sails possible, including potential destinations of

  • Gweek
  • Ferry Boat Inn
  • Tremayne Quay
  • Coverack
  • St Mawes
  • Falmouth
  • Maenporth
  • Carrick Roads
  • (Overnight destination Truro)

As well as excellent local sailing in Helford Passage itself.

Many tents on a green field in full sun. Helford River in the background.

It might be best to coordinate food orders so suggest you contact Sarah-Louise via the Cody WhatsApp group.

Cody ‘Cycle Club’ February ride

It poured, it rained, it deluged, it dripped, it flooded. The rain in January and February 2026 was relentless. Simon and Stephen were chatting and they agreed that a Cody cycle ride was required to raise morale. A date was put in the diary and then every day it rained and deluged. It was hopeless. But then something strange happened. The chosen Saturday for the ride was a dry, bright and sunny day, all day!

We rode in brilliant sun with a cold northerly wind making us aware that it was still winter. The route was one of our favourites, from West Dean to West Wittering beach. This is a mainly off-road route that is purpose made for walkers and cyclists. The views from the path were so beautiful and we all glad to be alive and to be out in the fresh air.

Cyclists pretending their bikes are a boat.

At the beach it was quite busy. We guessed that lots of people had seized the chance to get out after all the rain. We had lunch and then a gentle potter on the beach before heading home.

Stephen, Simon, Andy and Vanessa were from Cody on the ride and we were joined by three cycling friends.

The photograph shows the cycle path with one of the great big puddles on it. In truth, much of it was dry, but this seemed like too good a photo opportunity to miss!

All in all, this was a wonderfully enjoyable day out in the depths of a very wet winter. Seize the day!
