Cobnor Spring Camp

May Bank Holiday 2026

May Day at Cobnor
A few of us turned up on the Friday morning and sailed to Dell Quay in warm sunny weather. We set sail from Cobnor beach at about half past eleven in the morning after setting up boats and tents.

Mel and Steve sailed in their Comet
Trio with Mike as crew. Simon and Zak
in Simon’s Comet Trio. Martin and
David in the Martin’s Comet Versa and
Bill sailing single handed in his Pacer
dinghy. With the gentle breeze this
was a very pleasant sail. Steve had
spoken to Dell Quay Sailing Club
before the weekend and they kindly
offered to open the club house and
provide food, tea, coffee – and the bar
was also open! Dell Quay SC has nice
decking over the water to sit out on and have lunch. It was a lovely sail back but no time to go for an afternoon ice cream at Bosham as we sometimes do, because the water was ebbing fast. In the evening people had BBQs on the field in sunshine and as it got dark watched the moon rise over the tree silhouetted field. We chatted into the evening or passed the time star gazing and then went to bed.

Saturday was lovely and sunny in the morning but with no wind. Rob B and Talitha came down for the weekend, with dogs Tilley and Nugget. Also, Rob H, Emma H and family brought their newly purchased Comet Trio down for the day. We helped them set it up and then they went for a short sail in the slight sea breeze that had just picked up.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms were forecast for mid-afternoon onwards and as the wind had not arrived until after midday most people did not sail on Saturday, opting for a walk instead or just taking in the lovely surroundings of Cobnor on land. The rain did arrive but there were only a few sharp showers. Some of us went to the pub for supper.

On Sunday, Edmund, Andrea and family arrived and we all had a nice sail on the flood tide to Dell Quay for lunch and then took the ebb tide to sail to East Head for an ice cream and a stop on the beach before sailing back to Cobnor once the ebb tide had reduced. As it was a bank holiday, there was no need to pack up straight away and rush home, so a nice relaxed evening was enjoyed. Tents and boats were packed up the following day.

Overall, this was a lovely extended bank holiday weekend at Cobnor
