Social visit to The Vyne – 13th November 2021

Several members visited the National Trust’s Vyne House on what turned out to be a nice day in good weather. The Vyne is a pretty old house with a lake and a large wood. First, we walked for a couple of miles around the wood. The chat flowed freely. Tony and Hillary remembered that they had met before, and that Hillary had even crewed for Tony at a past Wanderer event. Ginny’s dog Phoebe attracted much attention which is something that she likes very much. Cuddles and food seem to motivate her well! Stephen, Sarah Louise and Mel put the world to rights about the state of education and a teacher’s lot. Meanwhile, the leaves were just starting to drop, nevertheless, the autumn colours were very attractive. The ground was mostly dry under foot and the going was good. We found the remains of what may have been a WW2 ammunition store in the woods. The National Trust are not sure if it had been one or whether it was a decoy for the one at nearby Bramley. Walk in the woods completed it was time for lunch in the cafe. We sat outside to eat, partly because it was nice weather and partly to avoid any possible Covid bugs inside the cafe. There were lots of people eating inside so it seems that others are more relaxed about this that we were. Next was a tour of the House itself which is an attractive property. Apparently, that which remains, which looks like it was built like this in the beginning, is actually only a third of what was a much larger property. The interior is interesting and more homely and less grand than some similar houses. As we departed, we
agreed that it had been really nice to meet old friends and to spend time together in such a nice place.
